Fall 2023 Girls/Boys Novice Program

BLS Crew looks forward to welcoming new Novice rowers in Fall 2023! The BLS Crew Novice program provides an opportunity for students to participate in both on-the-water rowing and on-land conditioning, and provides an excellent introduction to the fun, teamwork, community, and competition of the BLS Crew Team. All grade levels are welcome

Because the Fall season is short, the team can ONLY accept new Novice rowers for the Fall 2023 season IF they have participated in at least one week (and preferably two weeks) of a Learn-to-Row program. Students are encouraged to participate in BLS Crew's Summer Learn-to-Row Program if possible. However, if the dates do not work, other dates are available through Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI).

Alternatively, the BLS Crew Winter/Spring 2024 Novice program will start with indoor winter training in mid-January 2024. No prior experience or participation in a separate Learn-to-Row program is required for Novices who begin in the Winter/Spring season.

To register for the Fall season, complete this form: Fall Rower Registration.

Forms must be submitted once per academic year. Fall rowers will not need to submit forms again in the Spring. No rower will be permitted to attend practice until all required forms have been submitted.
All forms should be scanned and uploaded to the BLS Crew Forms Submission Portal no later than September 9*

  • Concussion Training Certificate:  obtained by completing the NFHS Concussion Training (download the certificate as a pdf)

  • Swim Test: New Novice rowers must submit a swim test. The form and instructions on how to complete are here: Swim Test Until a swim test is on record, the rower will have to wear a life vest during practice on the water.

BLS Sports Clearance

  • All rowers must obtain a Sports Clearance from the BLS Nurses’ office every season. To obtain a Sports Clearance, a physician's school/camp form dated after August 1, 2022 must be on file with the BLS Nurses. The BLS Nurse will notify the Crew Registrar directly once the Sports Clearance has been issued.

  • The Nurses will issue Clearances during W-blocks, studies, student leadership periods, physical education class, or after lunch, but NOT before or after school.

It is strongly recommended that Novice rowers obtain their Fall Sports Clearance from the BLS Nurses before the end of the school in June. The BLS Nurses make a limited number of Sports Clearance appointments available in mid-August, but thereafter will not make additional appointments available until after the start of the school year, so please do not delay as you will not be permitted to start practice if follow-up or additional forms are needed.
