Boys and Girls Novice Programs

The Fall 2019 program is designed for athletes (rowers and coxswains) who were new Novice rowers in Spring 2019 OR have participated in at least one week of a BLS Learn-to-Row Summer session or a Learn-to-Row program elsewhere.

Because the Fall season is short and starts with on-the-water practice, BLS Crew will not accept new rowers for the Fall 2019 season who have not satisfied the Learn-to-Row prerequisite. New rowers will also have an opportunity to join BLS Crew for the Winter/Spring 2020 season, which starts with indoor training in mid-January, and there will not be a Learn-to-Row requirement to start at that time.

For information about the BLS Crew Summer 2019 Learn-to-Row sessions, see the Learn-to-Row page. Students are encouraged to participate in BLS Crew's own program if possible. However, if the scheduling does not work, other Learn-to-Row sessions and dates are available through Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI),

Girls and boys Fall Novice programs will be run separately, while the summer Learn-to-Row is a co-ed program.

The Fall Novice program will serve as a continuation to crew with a focus on water safety, developing proper rowing technique and increasing fitness levels. Athletes can expect to row "sweep" on both sides of a racing shell, perhaps try out sculling, and spend time on the ergs. This group will race at the Fall State Championships and be prepared for the Spring regatta season.
