Lowell Novice Challenge

The Lowell Novice Challenge is the first significant Spring race for Novice rowers. It is also Novice parents' introduction to this hallowed stretch of the Merrimack River. Although historically a big, full-day event, it is now a smaller event.

A little first-time regatta info:

  • Welcome to your athlete's first regatta and the first of many trips to the Bellegarde Boathouse in Lowell! Regattas lots of teams, some logistics on the BLS side, more hours riverside and, sometimes, a bit more chaos!

  • Friends of BLS Crew (i.e., parents) provide "hospitality" to our athletes - shelter from rain and sun, food, water, first aid etc. We use signupgenius.com to solicit both both food and volunteers. To share the load of this responsibility, it is important that everyone pitch in over the course of the season. (Note: there are items listed that are consistent with what rowers have liked in the past. Feel free to get creative using the "Your Own Item" options.)

  • Keep in mind that, due to the pot-luck nature of our hospitality, it is difficult to keep track of food allergies and other specific requirements. Please send your athlete with appropriate food if this is the case.

  • Coolers! Please bring food that needs refrigeration (casseroles, sandwiches, etc.) in coolers. These are long events and food needs to be handled safely. There may be additional cooler space but better that as many people as possible bring them.
